December 4 - 6, Friday - Sunday
Chrysalis Retreat
This is the Synod-wide High School retreat at the 4H center in Front Royal. We will be leaving the church parking lot around 4 p.m. on Friday and return around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

December 11 - 13, Friday - Sunday
Confirmation Retreat
This is our West River Confirmation Retreat weekend. All confirmands should plan on attending. We will meet at the church at 4 p.m. and leave from there. We will return on Sunday around noon.

December 13, Sunday, 9:30 a.m.
Santa Lucia
At the end of our first worship service, we will have our Santa Lucia celebration. As Lucia and the star-children leave we will follow them to partake in the goodies during Fellowship hour.

Youth Christmas Party
All youth (7th to 12th grade) are invite to the Hunley’s home for a Christmas party.

December 14, Monday, Noon
Fun Bunch
The Fun Bunch will meet this month at the home of Lois Jones. Lois will play some seasonal music again this year and then lead us as we sing carols. There will be directions by the sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

December 20, Sunday, 11 a.m.
Christmas Pageant
The children and youth of Emmanuel will present their Christmas Pageant as an important part of the second worship service on that day. We will have a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the worship service to thank the children and youth.

December 20, Sunday, 4 p.m.
Caroling at the National Lutheran Home and Potluck Dinner
Everyone of all ages are invited to join us as we go out to the National Lutheran Home to do some caroling. We will meet in the lobby at 4 p.m. and then go to visit and sing carols. Afterwards we will head over to the Beardall’s for our tradition post-caroling potluck dinner.
We will have directions available after we finish caroling.

December 24, Thursday, 5 p.m.
Family Christmas Eve Service
Everyone is invited to come celebrate the birth of our Lord at this family Christmas Eve Service. Come hear the good news, sing Christmas carols, and listen to the Joyful Noise children’s choir as we worship and remember the reason for the season.

Christmas Eve Worship Service
Join us for a more traditional Christmas Eve Worship service at either 9 or 11 p.m.

December 25, Friday, 10 a.m.
Christmas Day Service
All are welcome to our “Christ-mass” Christmas Day worship service.

SPECTACULAR
YOUTH SKI RETREAT
January 22 - 24 2010
Seven Springs Ski Resort

All youth (and some adult volunteers) are invited to come on the SPECTACULAR Youth Ski Retreat on the weekend of January 22-24, 2010 at Seven Springs Ski Resort, Somerset,
PA. We will depart from Emmanuel at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22 and stop at McDonald’s in Breezewood, PA for supper (bring money.) We will sleep Friday and Saturday nights at Trinity
Lutheran Church in Somerset, PA, ski all day Saturday and Sunday, and return to Emmanuel around 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 24.

You do not have to know how to ski to come on this trip. We will teach you. In fact, it’s a great way to learn how to ski, and many of our youth have learned to ski on previous years’ trips.
The cost is $180 per person, which includes transportation, lodging, food Saturday and Sunday, and lift tickets. Adult volunteers are needed to help with driving and to assist as mentors. A large van is needed to transport the skis, boots, and poles.
Sign-up packets will be available in the Narthex in December.

Car Wash
All youth should come out to help with this car wash which will take place in the church’s parking lot. Youth can earn SSL hours.

Church Picnic
Everyone is invite to the Church Picnic. The BBQ will be provide. lease bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share.

June 16, Tuesday, 6 - 7 p.m.
ELCA Youth Gathering Meeting
This is a mandatory meeting for all those going to the 2009 Youth Gathering in New Orleans. We will be going over information about our focus issue while we are in New Orleans, the environment. We will meet at the Hunley’s home. You are then invited to stay afterward for fun and fellowship.

June 18, Thursday, 6 - 10 p.m., Trinity Lutheran Church
Lutherplooza - “Beach Party”
This is a High School Youth event for all youth in the Montgomery Conference. We will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church for a cook-out, games, wading pools, and fellowship. Trinity Lutheran is located at 11200 Old Georgetown Rd in Rockville.

June 21, Sunday, Second Service
Chi Rho Participates Commissioning
All those who will be traveling to the Chi Rho Work Camp will be commissioned at the 11 o’clock worship service.

June 22, Monday, Noon
Fun Bunch Lunch at the Hopkins
The Fun Bunch will meet at the Hopkins home for lunch and to tour Roz’s beautiful garden. Bring a bag lunch. Drinks, dessert and a salad will be provided. Also, if you have a folding lawn chair, please bring that as well.

June 28 - July 4
Chi Rho Work Camp
This is the Metro D.C. Synod’s annual youth mission trip to Neon, Kentucky. If you are interested and have not yet signed up, contact Pastor Lewis.

July 12, Sunday 6 p.m.
Dinner Club Pot Luck
This is the final meeting of the Dinner Club until the fall. Everyone is invited to attend and bring a dish to share. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall.

The Fun Bunch will be taking a trip to the Botanical Gardens in D.C. There will be a sign up sheet in the Narthex at the beginning of the month to indicate if you need a ride or if you will be a driver.

Confirmation Dinner
The second year confirmands and their families are invited to a dinner at the Thronson’s home.

May 31, Sunday, 11 a.m.

Confirmation
During the second worship service, the second year Confirmands will Affirm their Baptism. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate this milestone in these young people’s lives.

Youth "Get Together" at the Hunleys'
All youth are invited to the Hunley’s after the second service for a "Get Together" and fellowship. The Hunleys' home is located at 8206 Kenfield Court in Bethesda.

J.A.M.- IN, Lock-in at Mar-Lu-Ridge
This is a great Lock-In up at Mar-Lu-Ridge for youth ages 13-15. The cost is $40 a person. We will leave the church at 4:30 p.m. and arrive in time for Supper and stay until after supper on Saturday, returning to the church around 6:30 p.m. Please let Pastor Lewis know you are going by February 16th. Also, remember to bring warm clothes and waterproof footwear, especially if there is snow on the ground and we go tubing down the sled-run.

Fun Bunch Lunch
Everyone is invite to this catered lunch. We are asking for a donation to help with the cost of the lunch. This month we will look at the churches and culture of New Orleans.

February 24, Tuesday 6 - 8 pm
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper - Mardi Gras Style
Everyone is invited to come out for a Pancake Supper and enjoy some wonderful fellowship. All youth are needed to help with this event. SSL hours can be earned.

4th Annual Chili Cook Off
Come on out to taste some Chili (including a vegetarian chili), have some dessert, and enjoy great fellowship. We will also have some other food fare for those who prefer something besides chili. Tickets are $10 an adult and $5 for children 3- 12, with a $25 cap for families. Proceeds go toward the 2009 Youth Gathering.

Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Horton is an Elephant who has no trouble believing in a world that extends beyond his own., Many of the other characters do. As he sees it, "maybe they aren't small, maybe we're big." Maybe there is even someone out there bigger than him and his world, and he and his friends are actually the small ones. And what about the fact that he does not have any more proof than a tiny voice only he can hear? As long as that voice calls out for his help, Horton is not about to tell it that it does not exist. Hmmm, sounds familiar.

This is a wonderful movie for all ages. Bring a dish to share and a friend that will enjoy the
movie with you.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Mardi Gras Style
Tuesday, February 24, 6 - 8 p.m.
Come join us as we celebrate the end of the Epiphany season and prepare for Lent with our Mardi Gras style Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. This year we will continue the tradition of "Are You Smarter than a Sunday School Student?" as well as provide some entertainment. So come on out for a good time and good food. This is also a great time to bring a friend. Tickets are $7 a person or a family ticket for $30. Tickets can be purchased either in advance on Sundays, or at the door. Proceeds will go toward the 2009 Youth Gathering.

Chili Cook-Off

Last year we had fourteen (14) entries and it would be great if we could add a few more this year. Contact Pastor Lewis about your entry into the cook-off.
Tickets will be on sale in the Narthex two weeks before, but you can always get tickets at the door. You can also contact Pastor Lewis in the church office for tickets during the week. Tickets will also be on sale at the door.
Tickets are $10 an adult and $5 for children 3- 12 with a $25 maximum cap for families. Proceeds benefit youth programs. Bring the whole family. Bring a friend (or two).

Renew and Re-energize at this annual event hosted by the Metro D.C. Synod’s Division For Congregational Life. This event is for everyone interested in helping Emmanuel continue to develop and reach our vision of congregational life. The cost of the event is $20 and includes breakfast (8 - 9 a.m.) and lunch. Gift Wrapping
December 15, 2008

The youth will be provide gift wrapping services on Monday, December 15, 2008 in the Fellowship Hall. They will begin at 4 pm and continue accepting packages to wrap until 7 pm. You can bring your own wrapping paper, or have the youth use the paper they have. If you would like to drop packages off on Sunday, December 14, we will secure them until they are ready to be picked up on Monday. The youth will be accepting donations for the wrapping service with the proceeds going toward the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans.

Trip to Hershey Park
Youth and families are invited to head up to Hershey Park for a frightfully good time at HERSHEY PARK IN THE DARK (there is no school for Montgomery County Schools on Monday, November 3, 2008). We will leave the church parking lot after the second service and car pool up to Hershey Park. The cost to enter the park is $24, for those 3 - 8 years old and those over the age of 55 the admission price is $17 (plus parking). The park is open 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. More information is found below.

Register for Retreats
Chrysalis is the Metro D.C. Synod’s High School Retreat in Front Royal, VA. Registration forms are available in the church and online at youthspot.org under “Links.” Turn in registration form and $60 fee to Pastor Lewis by November 3, 2008.

The confirmation retreat forms and $60 fee is also due on this day. See below for more details on the confirmation retreat.

Confirmation Retreat
The first confirmation retreat for the year will be at the Manidokan Outdoor Ministries Center in Knoxville, MD. Please turn in registration form and $60 fee by November 3, 2008. We will plan on leaving the church parking lot around 4 pm and stop for a fast food supper on the way (please bring money for supper.) If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Lewis.

Pizza and Laser Tag 1 - 3:30 p.m.
The Youth will gather at CiCi’s Pizza in the Quince Orchard Shopping Center at 1 p.m. for lunch and the head over to Shadow Land Laser Tag for two games. The all you can eat buffet and a drink at Cici’s is $7 and two games at Shadow Land are $15. There will be prizes awarded after the second game.
Quince Orchard Shopping Center is located at the corner of Quince Orchard Road and Clopper Road. Enter the shopping center on Quince Orchard Road. (Clopper Road becomes W Diamond Avenue at Quince Orchard Road).

Hope Floats Sales Begins
Hope Floats for New Orleans as the Lutheran Youth From Emmanuel (L.Y.F.E.) prepares to send a team to give the people there a hand-up as well as learn leadership skills for the future good of the church. L.Y.F.E. will begin selling seasonal rubber ducks as a fund raiser for the ELCA Youth Gathering in News Orleans on this date in the Narthex.

This is a required meeting for all youth and adults who will be attending the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. We will provide a small, quick lunch.

All families are invited to join us for our Thanksgiving worship service as we give thanks to God for all that has been given to us.

Advent Wreath Workshop and Pot Luck Lunch
All families are invited to join us as we gather to make Advent Wreaths for our homes. The cost for materials is $15. Also, please bring your own work/gardening gloves and wire cutters.
We will also have a pot luck lunch and activities for young children. Please sign up in the Narthex beginning on 9 November 2008.

We will leave the church parking lot after the second service and car pool up to Hershey Park. With 50 of our their most popular children and family rides, including Stormrunner, Sidewinder, Lighting Racer, Fahrenheit and the Wild Mouse coasters, you will delight in the unique excitement of the holiday with great food venues, special kiddie shows, and other great entertainment available.

For kids 12 and under, Hershey’s Trick-or-Treat adventure starts at Hershey’s Chocolate World, and continues inside Hershey Park in Treatville.

The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything

Come join us for a family movie and pot luck dinner as we watch The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. Bring a Friend.

In this animated film, Elliot, Sedgewick and George are working as the clean-up crew at the Pieces of Ate Dinner Theatre that features a show about pirates which they hope-beyond-hope to star in some day. But with Elliot’s timid nature, Sedgewick’s laziness, and George’s issues of self-confidence, the trio will not even reach for their dreams.
But things change when they receive a note seeking help that sets the wheels in motion for them to stop being couch potatoes and become the people that are called to be.

L.Y.F.E. Assurance Sale
Beginning October 19, 2008

The Lutheran Youth From Emmanuel (L.Y.F.E) will begin selling LYFE Assurance to benefit our church in the future. This is a fund raising event for the youth and adults who will be attending the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. By purchasing LYFE Assurance you will become a stockholder in the future of our church by helping to fund leadership training, stewardship development, mission awareness, Christian values, and discipleship in our youth.
Stock shares will be $25 each (no limit on how many shares of stock you can purchase). Stockholders will receive a bi-monthly progress report before the Gathering. They will also receive news and a postcard from the youth while we are in New Orleans. In the Fall of 2009, stockholders will be invited to a stockholders dinner to learn about their investment.

But as much as adventure is a part of her reality, when trouble comes, the problem she faces is that none of her heroes have yet to prove themselves to be real. Those heroes that we read about or see on TV are not as real as the heroes in our own lives. They may not be as adventurous as those we idolize, but they are there.

Every one of us is baptized and called by God, but then what happens? As we gather for this afternoon event, we will explore that question. During this time, we will also have a live band, games, fellowship, pizza dinner, and worship. There is also a activities for the adults.

Cost of the event is $10 (make checks to “Emmanuel Lutheran Church”). We will meet in the church parking lot and leave at 2:30 p.m. and plan on returning to the church around 6:30 p.m. Contact Pastor Lewis for registration forms.

Markoff’s Haunted Forest
October 25 at 6 PM.

Everyone is invited to join us as we venture out the Markoff’s Haunted Forest again this year located at 19120 Martinsburg Road in Dickerson, MD (only 35 minutes from the church). We will meet at the front gate at 6 PM (look for Pastor Lewis) so we can enter together the forest at the same time because its more fun being scared together - plus you might get to see how Pastor Lewis really reacts when he is scared (which is really funny).

The cost s $25 a person to enter. They DO NOT take credit cards since they are out in the middle of the woods. You may also want to bring some extra money for hot drinks and snacks (it was chilly the last two years) There are also extras you can do such as the “Bat-line” (a Zip-line in the dark) and the haunted bus.

This is a family event and all ages are welcomed. However, the trail can be scary for some. Last year I saw adults get really scared and a bunch of kids laughing and pointing. You know your family members best when it comes to wondering about whether you or your children are up for the trail. Think of it as a time to bring your family closer together (as you hold on to each other). It can be a bonding moment. If you have any questions or need direction, feel free to contact Pastor Lewis.

Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate are Here!

The youth will begin selling Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate on September 14 2008. This will be an on going ministry with the proceeds going toward sending youth to the ELCA Youth Gathering. Fair Trade is a ministry of Lutheran World Relief and allows the farmers who grow the coffee and chocolate beans to make a sustainable wage by receiving a larger portion of the amount for which the beans are sold. This is done by forming farmer co-ops and taking out some of the middlemen in the purchasing process.

When you buy Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate you are not only support the youth of Emmanuel, but the many families who grow and make the products.

SPLASH DAY !
Family Water Fun

Water Park in Bohrer Park

Everyone is invited for a great day of water fun at the Water Park in Bohrer Park. The park is located at 512 S Frederick Ave (Rt 355) in Gaithersburg. Besides the main pool having a zero-depth entry, making it accessible to all – there is also a kiddie pool. One of the major attractions at The Water Park is the double water slide that is 250 feet long and twists and turns into the pool. There is also a mini-golf course next to the water park if you want to try your putting skills.

There is food and snacks available at the pool, but you can also bring your own cooler (no glass please). There is plenty of shade to get out of the sun as well as plenty of sunny spots to work on that tan.

A day pass for children and youth (1-17) is $5, adults $6.75 and Seniors (55+) is $5.50. The price is even less if you are a resident of Gaithersburg. There is also a Putt-n-Pool pass for $8.50 that includes a game of mini-golf.

Meet the Robinsons
Family Movie and Potluck Night

February 22, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

This is a wonderful animated film from Disney about a boy, Lewis, who is searching for something in his life. This film came out last year and was nominated for several awards.

The film explores the interesting questions of faith such as: If you could change something from the past, would you do it, why would you do it, and how would you change it? There are also some interesting twists and turns that require some thought and deductive reasoning, making this a refreshing change of pace from most “G” rated movies. I applaud the filmmakers since they were not afraid to challenge the audience intellectually. And I don't think it was a mistake to call the cool and smart main character "Lewis."

Lutherpalooza
Sr High Youth event for Montgomery Conference

Saturday, May 3, 200810:00 AM – 4:00 PM

We will begin our day at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, MD, gathering at 10:00 a.m. for breakfast snacks and wake-up / get-acquainted activities. Then we will travel by bus to Emmanuel, Bethesda by way of the Habitat for Humanity jobsite in Burtonsville, MD. After lunch and devotions at Emmanuel, it’s back on the bus and off to Trinity, North Bethesda for an afternoon of service – where we’ll be constructing toy boxes / storage chests for the children and families who will be living in the Habitat for Humanity houses. Each participating congregation will be bring home one or two chests for final decoration and to fill with games and toys, returning them to the families after they move into their new homes.

Important Youth and Parents Meeting
April 13, 2008

After each Worship Service

All youth (7th to 12th grade) and their parents should attend this important meeting (it is so important we are making it available after each worship service).

There are several events coming up in the next 6 months that we need to discuss as well as distribute information. These events include work camp, summer beach trip, summer lock-ins and registration for the 2009 National Youth Gathering.

Lock-Ins: Both the Middle School and High School Youth have ask for a few Lock-Ins over the summer. We should decide on the dates for these events as well as sign-up volunteers to help.

Beach Trip: We are planning on an over night trip to the beach during the summer. We should talk about expectations and sign-up volunteers.

Work Camp: We will be sending a team to Chi Rho Work Camp July 20 - 26, 2008 which takes place in Neon, Kentucky. This is a chance to get important before registrations are due on April 25, 2008.

2009 National Youth Gathering: It may seem early to start talking about an event that will take place in 2009; however, we will have to be ready to register for this event before the end of summer. This event will take place in New Orleans and will be completely different from other National Youth Gatherings in the past. We will have to start thinking about who plans on attending, set up a schedule to meet a few times during the summer, and start working on fund raising activities. Those who are currently in the 8th to 11th grades will be able to attend next year.

This is great Lock-In up at Mar-Lu-Ridge for 8th, 9th and 10th graders between the ages of 13-15.

We will leave the church at 4:30 p.m. and arrive in time for Supper and stay until after supper on Saturday, returning to the church around 6:30 p.m. Please let Pastor Lewis know you are going by February 24. Also, remember to bring warm clothes and waterproof footwear, especially if there is snow on the ground and we go tubing down the sled-run.

Walking Wet!
April 20, 2008, Sunday, 1:15 pm - 5:30 p.m.
For 3rd - 6th graders

Walking Wet! Exploring what it means to live as a baptized child of God. This is the annual Synod wide event for third to sixth graders that takes place at Abiding Presence in Burke, Virginia. This is a great opportunity for upper elementary students to join with other Lutheran’s their own age outside their own congregations for an afternoon of faith-forming activities, fellowship, food and fun! Activities include music, games, crafts, snack and a service project.

There is no cost for children of Emmanuel to attend this event. We will gather at the church and leave at 1:15 p.m. to head over to Abiding Presence. The event is over at 5 p.m. and we should return to the church around 5:30 p.m.

Registration forms can be found on the cabinet outside of Pastor Lewis’ office. All forms must be turned in by March 30, 2008. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Lewis.

Family Movie and Potluck
March 14, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share and watch this wonderful film. We will share some food and fellowship first and then start the movie.

The story follows a small cast characters and how their lives come together and change each other for the better. The owner of the shop (Dustin Hoffman) who claims to be over 200 yrs old and owns a pet zebra while the young shop manager (Natalie Portman), who was a music prodigy as a child, is trying to overcome feelings that she is not living up to her own potential. There is accountant, who is blind to seeing beyond the practical. Finally there is the boy with lots of hats, but no friends. They are bound together by the shop, which has a spirit of comfort, love, and joy.
Whether you have kids or not, if you are in the mood for something light yet meaningful, check out this film. This movie is brave enough to be simple, and true enough to be.... well, true. This is an uncomplicated film that could help you see the potential in yourself and the world around you. You just have to relax a little and believe.

Cici’s Pizza and Laser Tag
The youth will meet at the Cici’s Pizza in the Quince Orchard Shopping Center, located at the corner of Quince Orchard Road and Clopper Road. Afterwards we will walk to Shadowland Laser Tag and play a couple of games. The "All You Can Eat Buffet" at Cici’s is $7 with a drink and laser tag is $15 for two games. Prizes will be awarded after Laser Tag.

Souper Bowl Sunday
February 3, 2008

Our youth will hold soup-pots at the church doors on "Souper Bowl Sunday" again this year. They will join more than 15,000 youth groups in churches across the country collecting money to help feed and house the needy. In 2006 we raised $201 for local programs. We almost doubled it in 2007 by collecting $400 for the work camp. Our target is to come close to doubling it again this year. The proceeds we collect at Emmanuel go toward our youth work camp where we will be helping low income families build, repair, or replace homes.
In 2007, Emmanuel’s youth joined 15, 884 other youth groups to raise $8,167,872 to help those in need. On Super Bowl Sunday, we will report the amount raised to the Souper Bowl of Caring Headquarters to they can announce the total amount raised during the radio broadcast of the game (we are still hoping that they will announce it during the TV broadcast). Since "Souper Bowl of Caring" became a national grassroots event in 1993, more that $41 million has gone to help those in need.
Please support the youth of Emmanuel in this effort to "love our neighbors" by dropping a few dollars into the soup-pots on "Souper Bowl Sunday."

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Mardi Gras Style
Tuesday, February 5, 6 - 8 p.m.
Come join us as we celebrate the end of the Epiphany season and prepare for Lent with our Mardi Gras style Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. This year we instead of our "Annual Useless Talent Show," we will have a game of "Are You Smarter that a Sunday School Student." So come on out for a good time and good food. This is also a great time to bring a friend.
Tickets are $7 a person or a family ticket for $30. Tickets can be purchased either in advance on Sunday, or at the door. Proceeds will go toward future youth events such as the National Youth Gathering.

Get Ready to
Meet the Robinsons
Family Movie and Potluck Night
February 22, Friday, 6:30 p.m.
This is a wonderful animated film from Disney about a boy, Lewis, who is searching for something in his life. This film came out last year and is already nominated for three awards and is expected to be nominated for an Oscar as well.
The film explores the interesting questions of faith such as: If you could change something from the past, would you do it, why would you do it, and how would you change it? There are also some interesting twists and turns that require some thought and deductive reasoning, making this a refreshing change of pace from most "G" rated movies. I applaud the filmmakers since they were not afraid to challenge the audience intellectually. Also, kudos to them for making the hero a smart, intelligent, inquisitive kid who does not resort to rebellion, disrespect or mischief to achieve his ends. Without being moralistic and, admittedly, far from perfect, Lewis is still a good role model - cool and smart at the same time.

This animated feature follows a penguin, Cody Maverick, as he decides to leave his home and follow his dream to become a world class surfer. Along the way he befriends a surfing chicken and an old beach bum who shares wisdom with Cody. It takes some time, but Cody learns that winning isn’t everything. Hope, love, faith, friends and family are what makes life important, not the medals and trophies. Yes, winning is important. But real joy comes from being fully engaged in what we are doing. And hope doesn’t come from calculating whether the good news is winning out over the bad. It is simply a choice to take action for the good.

Renew and Re-energize at this annual event hosted by the Metro D.C. Synod’s Division For Congregational Life. This is a great event for all members of the church, but especially for church leaders, council members, evangelical committee members and youth leaders.

Dr. David W. Anderson, Charlie Roberts and Sandy Cutcheon, all nationally know Lutheran leaders in congregational life, will be there to talk with us. There is also a chance to break out into some specialized groups with these three, as well as other leaders in areas of congregational life. Christmas Shopping Child Care
December 8, Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Need to get some shopping done without the children? Want to take a break without the children? Bring them to an afternoon of Babysitting/Childcare at Emmanuel hosted by the Youth of Emmanuel at the church. We will provide babysitting and childcare for children 1 year old to 11 years old between the hours of 1 PM and 5 PM on Saturday, December 8. We will provide snacks, but please feed them lunch before you bring them to the church. The youth who are taking care of the children will be supervised by adults.

The cost of the childcare is $5 an hour for one child, $7 an hour for two or three, and $10 an hour for four or more. The proceeds will benefit the youth who will be attending the 2009 National ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans

Signing up for this service will be helpful, but we welcome those who decide on December 8 to use this service as well. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Pastor Lewis.

The Polar Express

“BELIEVE”

The Polar Express is based on the Caldecott Medal winning book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg (who also wrote Jumanji). In the Polar Express, a few minutes before midnight on Christmas Eve, a boy is awake and is given the opportunity to board the train bound for the North Pole.
On this train the process of faith is critical. This boy has to come to the task of deciding what to believe and what not to believe. His entire life will be influenced by his decision.
Along the way, the boy meets the Conductor who show the boy, and the other children, “the way.” This caring and serving Conductor gives each child the invitation to board the train, but the decision to follow the Conductor is left to each person.
Another character aboard the train is the Hobo, and it is unsure if he is “real” or a spirit. The Hobo is there to give insight to the boy, to answer questions, to help him along the journey to make the right decisions. When the boy is in great need of help, the Hobo is there.
Each child along the journey has challenges and obstacles to overcome. There are ample illustrations of the roller coaster of life that many of us live on.
If you are looking for innocence and a reason to believe, not just in Christmas but in the “spirit of Christmas” that lives in each of us, this is a film you must see.

Youth Ice Skating

CABIN JOHN ICE RINK

Come have a “kwel” time as we gather at the Cabin John Ice Rink for skating. All youth are invited. Admission for youth, depending on age is either $5 or $6. Don’t have ice skates? Rent either regular skates or hockey skates for $3 (plus tax). Snacks are on Pastor Lewis if you are there by 5 PM.
The rink is located at Cabin John Ice Rink at 10610 Westlake Dr. near the Montgomery Mall. Look for Pastor Lewis in the area near the skate rentals. Also keep an eye on him as he attempts to beat his record for laps without falling down. If you need a ride, contact Pastor Lewis.

All youth are invited to join Pastor Lewis at Rehoboth Beach for a two day retreat. We will have plenty of time for the beach and to visit the boardwalk. Cost will be $20 a person. We will leave the church parking lot at 8:30 AM on Thursday.

Emmanuel will have a team attending the Metro D.C. Synod’s Youth Work Camp, Chi Rho, in Neon, Kentucky. We will be leaving the church at 6:15 AM on Sunday, July 22 and return on Saturday, July 28 around 6:30 PM. We ask all those not attending the work camp to keep us in your prayers.

All youth are invited to this day trip to Rehoboth Beach. Bring your bathing suits, towels a change of dry clothes and money for snacks and a fast food dinner. We have the privilege to be able to use the facilities at Epworth Methodist Church a block from the Boardwalk to store our stuff and take showers before heading home. Washington Symphonic Brass

This free concert is comprised of performers from many of the region's most outstanding orchestras playing a repertoire of pieces written for brass ensemble. The concert begins at 7 PM, but you are invited bring a snack to share and join Pastor Lewis with a pre-concert bite to eat around 6:15 PM. Look for him in his orange shirt and hat.

Family Water Fun

Water Park in Bohrer Park

Everyone is invited for a great day of water fun at the Water Park in Bohrer Park. The park is located at 512 S Frederick Ave (Rt 355) in Gaithersburg. Besides the main pool having a zero-depth entry, making it accessible to all – there is also a kiddie pool. One of the major attractions at The Water Park is the double water slide that is 250 feet long and twists and turns into the pool. There is also a mini-golf course next to the water park if you want to try your putting skills.

There is food and snacks available at the pool, but you can also bring your own cooler (no glass please). There is plenty of shade to get out of the sun as well as plenty of sunny spots to work on that tan.

A day pass for children and youth (1-17) is $5, adults $6.75 and Seniors (55+) is $5.50. The price is even less if you are a resident of Gaithersburg. There is also a Putt-n-Pool pass for $8.50 that includes a game of mini-golf.

Come out and watch some of the best G and PG movies in the last few years. All of these mid-week kid friendly, youth inviting, parent entertaining movie are at 10 AM in one of two local theaters. Meet Pastor Lewis in the lobby at 9:45 AM.

Our first two films will on Wednesdays at the Majestic Theater in Silver Spring which is only 15 minutes from the church. The Majestic Theater is located at 900 Ellsworth Drive.

On Wednesday, July 18 we will watch CHARLOTTE'S WEB at the Majestic Theater to watch this award winning film. Tickets are only $1 and there are special prices on certain items at the concession stand as well.

On Wednesday, August 1 we will watch WALLACE & GROMIT at the Majestic Theater to watch this Oscar winning film. Tickets are only $1 and there are special prices on certain items at the concession stand as well.

The last two films will be on Tuesdays at the Germantown Stadium 14 Theater in Germantown at 20000 Century Blvd. (only 15 minutes from the church).

On Tuesday August 7 we will watch that great Muppet movie, MUPPETS FROM SPACE. Tickets are free, so get there early.

On Tuesday August 14 we will watch the Oscar winning film HAPPY FEET. Again, tickets are free, so get there early.

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS AT THE STRATHMORE
AUGUST 10, 13 & 17

Everyone is invite to meet at the Strathmore (10701 Rockville Pike) for three nights of movie under the stars. We will meet in the outdoor area starting at 7:45 PM so we can find a place to sit together. Remember to bring either a blanket or low beach chair to enjoy the film. Your are also invited to bring a snack to share starting around 8 PM. The film starts at 8:30 PM.

Parking is located in the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Garage off Tuckerman Lane. Parking in the garage is $4 Monday-Friday, and must be paid using a Metro SmarTrip card, available for a fee at all Metro Stations. Limited short-term parking is also available at specially marked meters along Tuckerman Lane.

You can also take the metro to the Grosvenor-Strathmore station.

Everyone is invited to the picnic. BBQ will be provided b Red, Hot and Blue. Please bring a salad, dessert or side-dish to share. We are also planning on putting together a youth vs. adult volleyball game.

Everyone is invited to an evening of baseball as we cheer on the Bethesda Big Train in a double-header against the Redbirds at Shirley Povich Field Field (10600 Westlake Drive in Cabin John Regional Park). This is a double-header, with the first game at 5 PM and the second at 7:30. Tickets are $7 for adults and $ for children (6-12). See below for more information.

The Fun Bunch invites everyone to join them as we head over to Brookside Gardens for Flights of Fancy, the Butterfly Exhibit. Tickets are $4 for children and $5 for adults. This is an annual event where butterflies from around the world fly freely around you as you walk through the exhibit. The main entrance to the Gardens is located at 1800 Glenallan Ave. in Wheaton.
